The Core Skills Program
Core Skills is a targeted literacy, numeracy and social skilling program designed to engage students, inspire positivity and support students to understand how to learn.
About the Core Skills Program
The Core Skills Program is a flagship initiative of Warilla High School where we specialise the supports offered to each student in the program.
The Core Skills Program supports students with:
- A smaller class size.
- A reduced number of teachers covering multiple Key Learning Areas, who collaborate regularly to share teaching pedagogies.
- Targeted and personalised literacy and numeracy support.
- A focus on the skills of learning, and the building of strategies to be life-long-learners.
- Building their social skills.
- Becoming resilient learners.
Joining the Program
Placements in the Core Skills Program are provided on a needs basis. Spaces within the class can be sought after because of the high level of support given to students and their impressive learning growth in the program.
Placements are offered to families based on information, observations and data gathered during our Year 6 to 7 transition process. Students who are generally included within the program are those who:
- Have not met the expected outcomes for their age/stage
- Need assistance with tasks in the classroom
- Need to understand more about how they learn
- Are keen students who are willing to try and be an active learner
- Do no take away from the learning of others
- Need to boost their confidence
- May have diagnosed additional and complex needs
- Are not currently in, or have been offered a position in, a special education class.

The Core Skills Experience
The Core Skills Program extends beyond the classroom through a range of extra and co-curricular opportunities designed to strengthen literacy, numeracy, and social learning. These experiences give students the chance to apply their knowledge in authentic contexts, deepen their understanding, and develop the confidence and skills needed to thrive across all areas of school life.
Some of our student experiences include:
- Leadership and resilience training days at Killalea State Park
- A Challenge Day on the high ropes course at Nowra Animal Park.
- Sporting & movement opportunities at places like Hang Dog climbing gym and Flip Out.
- An overnight camp where students are able to practise skills life-ready skills like catching public transport, navigating busy areas, organisation and time management.
Resilient Learner excursion at Killalea Reserve with the Illawarra Environmental Education Centre.
