Core Skills Program

The Core Skills Program has been developed to cater for students in Year 7 and 8 with literacy and numeracy difficulties. Students are identified by partner primary schools and the Year 7 and 8 classes are resourced with highly skilled, supportive teachers that differentiate the content and skills to cater for the needs of the students, and enable all students to achieve success. Although there is an emphasis on literacy and numeracy skills, social skills and wide range of enrichment opportunities are also deliberate inclusions in teaching programs.

The Core Skills program is dynamic and adaptive, according to the needs of each cohort:

  • Smaller class sizes, to cater for learning needs more effectively
  • Collation of student portfolios to assist with identifying learning goals for each student
  • Internal Literacy assessment against the Literacy Continuum, to identify learning needs of each student
  • Allocation of learning support teachers to work with students in small groups
  • Enrichment opportunities to engage students in learning outside the classroom (one per Term)
  • Parent showcase evenings to celebrate the success of student work
  • The use of Seesaw – A Learning Journal that enables parents/carers to see what students are learning about in each classes, and encourages parents to be an active participant in their child's learning
  • Principal's Reading Challenge – An "Incentive-based" strategy to encourage a love of reading that will assist students in increasing their vocabulary.
